Migraines & Cluster Headaches
Spots or lines or colored lights may dance before your eyes. Soon a whole plethora of symptoms may ensue: redness, swelling, tearing, muscle contraction, hallucinations, irritability, depression, numbness constipation or diarrhea and sometimes even a feeling of well-being! This is the beginning of a classic migraine headache. It can range from minor discomfort to immobilizing agony and can last from minutes to days. The pain most likely occurs on only one side of the head along with nausea and vomiting. The majority of sufferers are woman.
Cluster headaches come on abruptly, with intense throbbing pain arising high in one nostril and spreading behind the eye on that side of the face. Men between 20 and 40 are most affected by them. Medical treatment includes painkillers. This however, does not get to the cause of the problem but addresses only the symptoms. While symptom relief is no small thing it does not treat the root of the problem. Chiropractic on the other hand uses a natural, drug-free approach to health and has been a blessing to migraine and cluster headache sufferers. Chiropractors are the only healthcare professionals trained to analyze and correct the vertebral subluxation complex, a condition that affects your spine, nerves, joints discs and other structure. This common, often painless condition can weaken your body, cause fatigue and pain, lower vitality and set the stage for sickness and diseases. Please keep in mind that the purpose of chiropractic care is not to cure specific diseases but to correct the vertebral subluxation complex. This allows your body to restore itself to a greater level of health and wholeness to better heal itself.
In conclusion anyone suffering from headaches of any type would do well to see their chiropractor to ensure that their spine is free of the vertebral subluxation complex.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is the occupational disease of the 21st century. CTS can be identified by swelling of the fingers, dry palms, blanching (whitening upon pressure) of the hand, or pain so intense that it awakens you at night with similar symptoms in the upper arm, elbow, shoulder or neck.
Carpal tunnel can be found in your wrist. Your carpal (wrist) bones form a tunnel-like structure called the carpal tunnel, through which passes nine tendons and one nerve-the median nerve. CTS occurs when the median nerve is irritated. Just about anyone can get CTS. The Medical Approach- The medical approach to CTS is to stop using the wrist in the same way by wearing a splint (wrist immobilization). Resting the wrist has worked for many people. In others, ice or drugs such as diuretics or anti-inflammatories are also used. In persistent symptoms, corticosteroids may be injected into the crease in the hand near the wrist which may provide relief. This approach has a high relapse rate with side effects.
The Chiropractic Approach:
Since most people who do repetitive tasks do not get CTS there appears to be a contributing factor to this conditions. In many people it may be the health of the spine and that is why anyone suffering from CTS should see a chiropractor to ensure that his/her spinal column is properly aligned and free from nerve pressure.
Vertebral subluxations (spinal nerve root irritation caused by spinal misalignments) have been observed in many patients who have carpal tunnel or related hand and wrist problems. In fact, nerve compression in the neck can block the flow of nutrients to the nerves in the arm, shoulder, wrist and related areas, making them more susceptible to injury. Anyone suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome should see a chiropractor to ensure that their spine is free of spinal nerve stress. Not as treatment per se for carpal tunnel syndrome but as a way of rebalancing the spine and removing structural stress from the nervous system.
Hyperactivity and Learning Disorders
Childhood neurological/learning /psychological disorders have gone from rare occurrences to epidemic proportion in a little more than one generation. 3-7 percent of US children are considered to have ADHD. A growing number of scientists, medical doctors and parents claim this increase is largely due to childhood vaccinations that are Neurotoxic (poisonous to the brain).
In addition to vaccinations, head trauma, birth trauma, severe burns, infectious diseases, accidents and falls have been linked to neurological damage. Psychiatric drugs such a Ritalin are given to children to treat their symptoms. However, drugs are dangerous. Ritalin can cause drug-induced behavioral disorders, psychosis, mania, drug abuse, permanent neurological tics (Tourette’s syndrome), growth retardation and addiction. Other side effects include loss of appetite, blurred vision, dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, dry mouth, stomach upset, sleeplessness, irritability, constipation weight loss, chest pain, and the list goes on. Many parents are greatly concerned about drugging their children and have turned to chiropractic for help. Chiropractic adjustments improve blood flow to the brain. Chiropractic has been shown to be effective in reducing anxiety, enhancing well-being and improving brain function. Chiropractic adjustments appear to balance nerve reflexes in the spinal cord.
In conclusion, chiropractic releases stress on the brain, spinal cord and related nerves and structures which can benefit all children and adults, especially those suffering from neurological disorders.
Blood Pressure
At this moment you have blood pressure. But don’t worry, everyone has blood pressure. You need it to send your blood through your miles and miles of blood vessels bringing oxygen and nutrition throughout the body.
There is no “just right” blood pressure; 120 over 80 is just average. Like the idle of a car, some people run a little high; others a little low. Blood pressure also fluctuates based on the time of day, exercise, age, sex, emotional makeup, drug and alcohol use, emotional stress and many other factors. When blood pressure is abnormally low, it’s called hypotension and when it is abnormally high, it’s called hypertension. The Medical Approach Most MDs attempt to lower blood pressure with prescription drugs. These can cause rashes, hives, sensitivity to lights, joint aches, confusion, impotence, weakness, dizziness, lack of energy, the list goes on. While there is some logic to that approach, the deeper questions of “What is causing the blood pressure to rise?” Is high blood pressure serving a purpose? “Are we just treating symptoms?” One physician discussing high blood pressure states, “…really isn’t a disease in itself but is rather a symptom of smoking, obesity, or perhaps inactivity…perhaps physicians should stop taking blood pressures and should start weighing people and asking them about exercise, diet, smoking and work habits.”
Chiropractic Approach
One of the best things you can do for your blood pressure, as well as the rest of your body, is to see a doctor of chiropractic. Your nerves help regulate your blood pressure. Keep them free of stress. Doctors of chiropractic perform spinal adjustments to correct vertebral subluxations of spinal nerve sites which upset body balance and nerve health. Chiropractic seeks out more natural, conservative methods before submitting to more radical (i.e. drug and surgical) approaches. Proper nutrition, exercise, rest and emotional care, along with a healthy spine, are all vital for optimal wellbeing.
Asthma, Bronchitis & Emphysema
During an asthma attack the bronchioles (tiny branches which enter the lungs) become swollen, go into spasm and fill with mucus. Asthmatics struggle for every breath, literally gasping and wheezing for life during an attack. Long time sufferers may develop a barrel chest. Attacks are triggered by allergic reactions, emotional stress, physical exertions or irritants like cigarette smoke. In sever causes it can cause death.
In bronchitis there is increased mucus in the trachea and bronchial tubes. It’s sometimes called “smoker’s cough” because cigarette smoking is the most common cause. Non-smokers rarely have this. However, children of smokers have been known to have bronchitis due to passive smoke.
Emphysema is usually associated with long-term smoking—many bronchioles are blocked and the lung itself is destroyed. With less lung tissue the blood gets less oxygen, causing high blood pressure and heart trouble. People chronic emphysema can suffer for years causing lethargy, muscle weakness, impairment of mental function and, in severe cases, a slow death.
Medicine offers no cure for asthma, bronchitis or emphysema. Patients are told to avoid physical or emotional irritants and are given temporary relief with cortisone, inhaled corticosteroids or bronchodilators that prevent or reduce selling inside the bronchi. These drugs have severe side effects including addiction.
The Chiropractic Approach
For over a hundred years, sufferers of all types of respiratory conditions have sung the praises of chiropractic care. Lung volume has been reported to increase after chiropractic adjustments. Researchers have found spinal care superior to conventional medical bronchodilators, expectorants and corticosteroids.
Anyone with asthma, bronchitis or emphysema or other chronic lung condition need to ensure their lungs and bronchi are receiving uninterrupted nerve communication from their spines. Chiropractic is the healing art dedicated to keeping the nerve passages in the body open and unobstructed. As one famous researcher wrote: “In asthma the mechanical factor (spinal subluxation) may be so important that until the mechanics are put right the symptoms will persist.”
Fibromyalgia
Symptoms include; fatigue and radiating, gnawing, shooting or burning muscle, tendon and joint pain all the time. “Tender points” on your neck, shoulders, chest, rib cage, lower back, thighs, knees, elbows and buttocks along with increased sensitivity to pain, heat, cold, touch and bright lights.
For some this condition is annoying; for others, the symptoms are all but disabling. Medical Approach The medical profession is at a loss when confronted with fibromyalgia. Some consider it to be of genetic origin; however, no disease is purely genetic. The non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that are given are: painkillers, antidepressants and various prescription drugs. These only mask the symptoms and give temporary relief at best. MDs are also prescribing a combination of therapies: medication, physical therapy, counseling and support groups. These however have had limited success.
Non-medical Approaches People are increasingly turning to non-medical approaches for fibromyalgia. Exercise, especially aerobic exercise (AE), is often able to relieve depression and pain which will help return people to day-to-day functions.
More and more fibromyalgia sufferers are turning to the drug-free, natural chiropractic approach. Why?--Because chiropractic gets results. The role of your doctor of chiropractic is to free you from a severe form of stress found in your body: the subluxation. A subluxation is a distortion of your spine and body structure that stresses your brain, spinal cord, nerves, joints, ligaments, muscles, internal organs and other tissues. By removing your subluxations and restoring your nerve system to 100% your body can resist disease, have increased energy and improve body function. The responses of patients with fibromyalgia when turning to chiropractic have been overwhelming. Patients report that they are able to resume their normal activities. When your body is free from subluxations, your self-healing ability, (your “inner healer,”) is better able to deal with all health problems, including fibromyalgia.
Digestion, Heartburn & Ulcers
Dyspepsia & Ulcers Chronic stomach ache, also called nervous stomach or dyspepsia, is a common stomach condition. Another is ulcer, which occurs when the powerful acids and digestive juices start to eat through the stomach and intestines—a very painful condition.
Pyloric Stenosis/Heartburn/Gastritis Pyloric stenosis is a tightening or shrinking of the pyloric valve that connects the esophagus and the stomach. Heartburn occurs when food reverses course and jumps from the stomach through the pyloric valve, up to the esophagus. Gastritis is a term used to describe inflammation of the stomach walls.
The Medical Approach
Medical care is often directed to treating symptoms with drugs. Treating symptoms alone, however, apart from the risk of the side effects, can lead you into the false belief that your problem is gone merely because you are symptom free.
The Chiropractic Approach Your chiropractor analyzes your spinal column for vertebral subluxations, a condition that damages your nerves and can interfere with proper communication between your brain and your internal organs. These organs include the digestive system. Every organ in your digestive system—mouth, tongue, esophagus, pyloric valve, stomach, intestines, glands, pancreas and others need a healthy nerve supply from your spine. With a spinal adjustment, your doctor of chiropractic will correct or relieve your vertebral subluxation; you’ll be more balanced and function more efficiently.
Ear Infections
Ear infections are affecting children in epidemic numbers.
Otitis media is the inflammation of the middle ear characterized by the accumulation of fluid in the middle ear, bulging of the eardrum, pain in the ear and, if eardrum is perforated, drainage of purulent material (pus) into the ear canal. Otitis media is the most frequent diagnosis in sick children in the U.S., especially affecting infants and preschoolers. Almost all children have one or more bouts of otitis media before age 6. The Medical Approach
The most common medical treatment for ear infections is antibiotics, oral decongestants and surgery (tubes in the ears). None of these treatments are safe or effective. Problems associated with antibiotics include allergic reactions, damage to the digestive system, yeast infections, antibiotic resistance and repeat infections. The Chiropractic Approach
Chiropractors relieve the body of stress—the subluxation, a distortion in your body that interferes with your proper function. Correcting or removing subluxations through chiropractic care is essential for anyone with ear infections. Keeping your child’s body free from subluxations will help your child’s natural defenses fight against disease.
In fact, chiropractic care had an excellent record of safety and effectiveness for infants and children suffering from ear infections.
Sinus Trouble
Do you wake up with a stuffy head and mucus in your throat or nose? Do you feel as if you always have a cold or that your last cold never left you? Do you suffer from chronic “postnasal drip”? If you said yes you may be suffering from sinusitis a very common condition of people between the ages of 18 and 45.
When mucus fills the sinus linings the condition is called sinusitis (when it only involves the nose or throats its called rhinitis and may mimic a cold). When drainage is blocked, pressure increases and can cause pain, discomfort, headache and swelling around the eyes, dull ache in the cheekbones, pain in the teeth or jaw, increased nasal secretions, chills, fever and a general “yucky” feeling. The Medical Approach
Standard medical treatment for sinusitis and rhinitis are promotion of drainage and treatment with decongestants, antibiotics and antihistamines. This approach is controversial as drugs may alleviate nasal stuffiness; they have limited effects on the sinuses and can cause side effects such as insomnia, nervousness and high bold pressure and drowsiness. The Chiropractic Approach
Chiropractic is not a treatment for sinus conditions, yet sufferers often find relief after chiropractic care. Chiropractic relieves stress on the nervous system and body structure which helps your body work more efficiently. Further, spinal care in conjunction with cranial adjusting can ensure that the skull bones move freely and “breathe”, permitting body fluids to drain without interference. Spinal care can help your body function better, improve your resistance to disease and enhance your well-being.
Arthritis and “Rheumatism”
Arthritis is a disease of the whole body (a systemic disease) most dramatically affecting the joints. The word “arthritis” may include more than 100 conditions, many that were formerly known as “rheumatism.”
Osteoarthritis or OA, also known as degenerative joint disease, is the most common arthritis of all. Almost everyone over the age of 50 has a touch of it. In many people there are no symptoms, others have pain and some can be incapacitated by it. OA often results from an unbalanced spine creating stress on the joints. Your body grows extra bone material in the joints to help deal with the stress. Sometimes the bones compress nerves, causing pain and affecting internal organs. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is the crippler! RA destroys joints, affects the blood vessels of the heart, eyes, skin, muscles and other organs causing fatigue, weight loss and acute pain. It often appears suddenly around the ages of 30 to 40 and may disappear just as suddenly! No one knows what causes it, many believe it is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks itself! The Medical Approach
Medicine offers no cure for arthritis. Since the underlying cause is unknown, symptom treatments including a lifetime of drugs for the pain and inflammation, heat, hot packs or exercises in warm water are suggested. If the joint becomes severely deteriorated, then surgery may be considered. Many of the drugs prescribed have severe side effects such as stomach irritation, bleeding ulcers, thinning and weakening of the bones. The Chiropractic Approach
For over a century arthritic patients have benefited from chiropractic care. Chiropractic care has even reversed osteoarthritis---something previously considered impossible. And yet chiropractic is not an arthritis treatment. It is a system of healthcare that improves the function of your entire body by removing or releasing blockages from your spine called vertebral subluxations.
Vertebral subluxations weaken your nervous and immune systems, thus weakening your entire body. This can set the stage for sicknesses and diseases of all kinds—arthritis included. Chiropractic helps turn on your “inner healer”, your inner healing ability. When your spine is free of subluxations your body functions better. That is why anyone with arthritis needs a spinal checkup to locate and remove their subluxations.
Infants and Babies
You do so many things to ensure your babies health: during pregnancy you eat right; you avoid toxins like alcohol, cigarettes and drugs; you nurture your child keeping them safe from harm. But have you had your baby’s spine checked? How do you know if your child’s spine is healthy? Your doctor of chiropractic is specially trained to check your child’s spine for areas of distortion causing nerve damage—the vertebral subluxation complex.
Sometimes a newborn’s spine is harmed during the birthing process. With the birth process becoming more and more an intervening procedure, the chiropractic adjustment becomes even more important to the child’s future. For over 100 years doctors of chiropractic have observed the often dramatic responses of infants to chiropractic care. There seems to be no limit to the conditions that can respond to chiropractic care: colic, difficulty breast feeding, Erb’s palsy (an arm is limp and underdeveloped), toricollis (twisted neck), unbalanced face and skull development, foot inversion, ear, nose and throat infections, allergies and sleep disorders and projectile vomiting are just a sampling. All infants however, sick or well, need to have a healthy spine. When does a baby need a spinal checkup?
- After the birth process.
- When the baby start to hold his/her head up.
- When the baby sits up.
- When the baby starts to crawl.
- When the baby starts to stand.
- When the baby starts to walk.
Our children deserve to be treated naturally, not with dangerous chemical drugs and unproven surgeries. Give you baby the best possible chance to have a healthy life. Please bring your child in for a chiropractic spinal exam. It might make a BIG difference for your child(ren) for the rest of their lives.
Pregnancy
If you are pregnant, one of the best things you can do is see a doctor of chiropractic. Chiropractic care provides so many things a pregnant body needs; flexible and balanced spine, hips and pelvis; internal organs without postural stress and freedom from nerve stress—all essential for a healthy pregnancy and delivery.
A pregnant woman needs to have her body as healthy and strong as possible in order to handle the rigors of pregnancy and childbirth. Chiropractic will help ensure that all body systems function properly especially the reproductive organs and structures that are essential for a healthy pregnancy. If the body structure is causing the slightest nerve interference to the systems it could adversely affect the mother and the developing fetus. Chiropractic care may help maintain pregnancy, control vomiting, deliver full-term infants with ease and produce healthier infants. Chiropractic has demonstrated success with back pain, premature contractions and back labor.
Allergies
Your immune system keeps you 100% natural and organic! It recognizes and destroys anything that’s not supposed to be in you: bacteria, viri, pollutants, dust, pollen, drugs, and tumors, dead pieces of your own cells, and even artificial hearts and donor organs.
The most common immune system disorder is the allergy. Allergies occur when the immune system overreacts to an allergen and produces too many neutralizing chemicals (especially histamines) to counteract it. What Causes Allergies?
The incidence of allergies and related disorders (skin conditions and asthma) are rising all over the world. Yet the cause of this increase remains a mystery. There is mounting evidence that the cause of this rise is the increasing number of vaccinations. The Medical Approach Orthodox medicine has no cure for allergies, only treatment of symptoms. Since runny eyes, irritation, redness, fullness in the sinuses and other allergy symptoms are caused by histamines, antihistamines are often prescribed to dry mucous membranes. However, antihistamines can cause serious heart problems and should not used with alcohol, sedatives or tranquilizers.
The Chiropractic Approach
Allergy sufferers have praised chiropractic care for over a century. Chiropractic is not a treatment for allergies however. The goal of chiropractic care is to locate and correct a serious type of spine and nervous system stress called the vertebral subluxation complex (VSC). By releasing stress on the nervous system, chiropractic permits the immune system to function more efficiently.
Your nervous system and immune system are interrelated and the health of one affects the health of the other. For over a hundred years chiropractors have helped many people adapt to the stresses of their environment into those relating to allergies, by reducing the nervous system stress caused by vertebral subluxations. |
